Setting goals is an essential aspect of personal growth and development. It helps you focus your efforts, track your progress and stay motivated. However setting goals that work for you can be challenging. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on how to set goals that work for you.
So how do we go about setting goals that actually work?
1. Identify Your Values
The first step in setting goals that work for you is to identify your values. Your values are the principles that guide your life and shape your decisions. One of my values is honesty and even though you might think it doesn’t guide my life too much; it does. When I plan to go anywhere, be it to a family gathering or maybe it’s to a live experience like the talk I went to in January. How to manifest your wildest dreams with Gabby Bernstein. If the situation means I will be unable to be my most authentic honest self , I pass on it. If it involves doing something that goes against my values, I will try to find an alternative. For this reason it is essential to set goals that are in alignment with your values.
2. Make Them Specific
S.M.A.R.T goals are an effective tool to bring clarity to your goals as well as a focused plan of achieving it. Setting specific goals is crucial to achieving these goals. When goals are vague, it can be challenging to measure progress and stay motivated. To make your goals specific, use the SMART criteria. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of setting a goal to “exercise more,” make it specific by saying, “I will exercise for 30 minutes three times a week for the next three months.”
3. Break Them Down
When you break down the chunk of your goal into smaller actions and tasks they become less overwhelming. When we break them down, they can tend to look less daunting and we start to see the steps we need to take in order to achieve them. It also helps you track your progress and celebrate small wins along the way. For example, if your goal is to run a 5k, break it down into smaller tasks such as running for five minutes, then ten minutes, then a mile, and so on.
4. Be Realistic
When we set goals that are unrealistic we can become frustrated and disappointed in ourselves. I am a culprit of setting goals the size of molehills and then throwing myself a pity party when I fail to achieve it. I have this self deprecating tendency to constantly reassure myself I am a failure and setting unrealistic goals has become the easiest way to do that. Take my advice. Don’t torture yourself. Don’t be like me. Set realistic goals. While it’s essential to challenge yourself, make sure your goals are achievable. Honestly pity parties are no fun. Consider your current abilities, resources, and time constraints when setting goals. Make sure to factor in alternative options if things don’t go as planned.
5. Stay Accountable
Accountability is essential to achieving your goals. Share your goals with someone you trust, such as a friend or family member, and ask them to hold you accountable. You can also use apps or tools to track your progress and stay motivated. For example, if your goal is to meditate every day, use an app that sends you reminders and tracks your progress.
